A BRAND WITH A PERCEIVED POLITICAL POV PREACHES BIPARTISANSHIP
While Birkenstock has long been assigned political connotations (e.g., the reporter’s shorthand for committed progressives, “Birkenstock-wearing liberals”), at its core, this humble German sandal maker is about comfort and support. That’s a platform everyone can stand on. As presidential marketing slipped into negative mode in 2008, Birkenstock went positive inviting Americans to vote with their feet.
For the viral videos, we sent a Birkenstock “ambassador” to place a pair of sandals on the doorstep of folks who displayed election signs in their yards to send a message that Birkenstock supports comfort for everyone. A hidden camera revealed their reactions. With the help of a MacGyver-like filmmaker friend, these videos were conceived, shot and edited in less than a week.
